You can't be on the internet and NOT have an IP address. Tor just changes the IP you appear to be coming from to an exit node
And yes, you can use Tor and Vidalia without privoxy. Polipo is a fine alternative.
Or you can download the Tor Browser Bundle and have a pre-configured firefox/tor
